STANDING ORDER FOR GOALDEN LOTTERY

FAN ZONE Today’s FAN PROFILE is from Derek Moran a long time fan of the club. First Game Seen: It was wartime football in the 1942/43 season when I was just 13. The match was against Tranmere Rovers and servicemen stationed locally were part of the team. Southport won 8-0 and were doing very well in the regional league. My first game in Non League football was away at Holly Park, South Liverpool when on arrival we were greeted by a young fellow with an Alsatian dog-Can I look after your car mister?! I can’t remember the score but I’m sure we lost-and my car was still there at the end of the game. Cup Runs: Reaching the 5th round of the FA Cup with Billy Bingham was a bit special and of course reaching the FA Trophy final at Wembley with Paul Futcher tops the lot. Highs And Lows: The 2002/03 was a rollercoaster, being in a play off place early in the season, beating Notts County in the FA Cup and then a very poor second half of the season saw us slump to the bottom 3 in the last game of the season. Haig Avenue: I used to love being able to stand high up on the corner terrace backing on to Meols Cop School. It was from this position that I saw Southport beat Cardiff in the FA Cup with George Andrews scoring. This area was of course declared unsafe as the ground fell in to decay. I also remember there being an underground teabar on the popular side were we all used to congregate at half time for the usual football banter. I can still be found near the halfway line on the popular side. Managers: What a character Bob Murphy was he was the first manager to win a Trophy a few years after coming out of the Football League. It was dubbed the Milk Cup being sponsored by Dairy Crest and we beat Horwich 4-0 in the final at Deepdale. Bob was once seen walking round the ground during a league game and regularly stood behind the goal. He was also responsible for finding Andy Mutch in the Southport & District League. Players: I have always considered that Steve Haw from Marine was an absolute bargain buy. As for the one that got away, Lee Trundle springs to mind in recent times. My favourite player from our early Non League days was Graham Barrow, he was an incredibly strong midfielder with superb control (He was a great player when he was in your team but a horror to have playing against you-Rob) Memories: I once remember a Cup match at Horwich RMI on a pitch that sloped three ways when, with 2 balls on the pitch at the same time Horwich scored a vital goal and the Port lost. The hot pot at Horwich was always excellent however!! Thanks to Derek for doing this fan profile, I have now got a couple more which will feature in future editions of the programme.
