FAN PROFILE NAME-John Massam FIRST
HOME GAME EVER SEEN-Southport 3
Doncaster 1 on 14 October 1961. Southport’s goals scored by McCarthy, Blore
and Fielding in front of a crowd of 5312. FIRST
AWAY GAME EVER SEEN-Chester 2
Southport 1 on 18 February 1967 with our goal being scored by Jim Fryatt in
front of 5240. BEST
GAME EVER SEEN-Cardiff City FA
Cup 1965/66, performance, crowd (14230) atmosphere-12 years old and best
sporting day of my life. WORST
GAME EVER SEEN-Many candidates
for this, but I’ll go for losing 4-1 at Spennymoor in the FA Cup in 1975 when
still a league team. BEST
OCCASION(S)-Beating Cardiff in
the FA Cup in 1965/66, winning 7-0 at Darlington in the fog in 1972/73, any win
over Stockport County and Alex Russell’s goal to clinch the 4th
division title in 1972/73. WORST
OCCASION(S)-Losing at
Altrincham in injury time in the FA Cup in 1978/79 after equalising in the 89th
minute. I’d given a lot of stick to the Alty fans when we scored and had to
get out quickly after their winner!! The spineless surrender at Stevenage last
season also springs to mind. FAVOURITE
EVER PLAYER-God aka Eric
Redrobe. My best ever player would be Tommy O’Neil in the league and Steve
Whitehall in the NPL first time around. FUNNIEST
MOMENT WATCHING SFC-Many
drunken moments (I can vouch for that-rob) but I’ll go for Gary Holmes falling
out of the tea hut at Shildon in an FA Trophy game-perhaps you had to be there
to appreciate it! BEST
GOAL SEEN SCORED BY SOUTHPORT PLAYER-Joint decision- Jim Fryatt’s header at Mansfield in 1972/73 season and
Tony Quinn’s chip from inside the area at Telford
in the FA Trophy in the 85/86 season. BEST
GROUND VISITED WATCHING SFC-Wembley-some
people thought it was a dump, but who cares-we played there. ANY
ANECDOTES-Travelling to York
in November 1977 in a two car convoy, I had to stop quickly to avoid cattle on
the road, my friend behind didn’t react as quickly and slammed into me, new
car two weeks old. The car boot was jammed so I couldn’t get my coat out and
froze in the ground. And we lost to a last minute own goal! |
