Vale Played Southport in the Cup |
In 1988, Port Vale, fresh from their famous FA Cup run the previous
season took on non-league Southport in the cup - and the BBC was there
to see it all...
The match was one of the main games shown on the Match of the Day
programme but the ground itself was a novelty for many Vale fans.
Haig Avenue's away end was nothing more than a grass bank and as the
pictures below show - it soon became rather clogged up as over a
thousand Vale fans made the trip to Merseyside.
For the record the game ended 2-0 in Vale's favour. The Valiants went on
to defeat Bolton in the next round before succumbing to Norwich by three
goals to one at Vale Park.
Pictured below - before and after - the Vale end fills up with fans...

Grass bank still evident
