AWAY DAYS

A Day Out In Worcester

It was to be new ground number 139 for me and a place I have never visited before but heard a lot about. We set off from The Fleece at 10.00am and arrived in Worcester at 12.20. The journey down was uneventful but I just couldn't believe the number of Man United fans travelling in their coaches up the motorway for the match at....Old Trafford. I always thought people exaggerated the numbers who came from "darn sarf" but they were right. We also passed a coach load of Willenhall Town fans travelling to Mossley, I had much more respect for them. Arriving in Worcester early meant we had time to wander round the town and after a quick lunch we set off for the cricket ground to see if it was flooded! When you see the pictures of it underwater it really is hard to believe it can happen when you see it on a normal day.  We had a wander round the town but the rain was getting heavier so we decided the bookies was a better option! We got to the ground at 2.45 and the rain was steadier by now. I phoned through the team to the missus to update the website, she really is getting good at it now. I very rarely have a need to use a mobile phone so my £20 top up can normally last for months. The games  at Kettering and here today saw it get plenty of use with the goals, sending offs and action updates. We got that early goal again which put the large and noisy contingent of Southport fans in good heart. Worcester's equaliser was top drawer but we gradually gained the upper hand and it only seemed a matter of time before we would score and it came as no surprise to see Leady on the score sheet followed by Fearnsy coolly dispatching the penalty. Enough has been said about the pen already so I won't harp on about it. 3-1 at half time and that's how it stayed. I always prefer to stand behind the goal but midway through the second half I was soaked to the skin so went undercover to dry out. The ground was very old looking with very little sign of any modernisation but I thought it had a certain something about it and enjoyed my visit. It was £9 to get in and £2 for the programme which was excellent with a full range of colour photos and some great features. The Southport fans left in high spirits which were heightened further when we heard James Alexander Gordon give the Nuneaton score out. Don't you love it when CN games are on the coupon, you actually get to hear the scores before you get home! Four points clear still with games in hand, it is looking good but far too early to count chickens or hear the plump lady singing! Another great Away Day, these away matches really are special at the moment let's hope we can keep the great run going and make Harrogate the party to end all parties! We were back for 7.30 having again passed the Man U fans retreating to their homes in Essex. Give me my local team anyday!
