NEWS ARCHIVE JAN 07 to JUNE 07
30 June
Southport Carnival.
TIY are running a shoot in target football game see
here with the person who scores the most
"goals" on the day winning a Southport FC Season Ticket and prizes for anyone
who scores a hit. TIY and Club souvenirs will also be on sale. Memberships can
also be taken out or renewed. A great day is planned with Trust In Yellow
working to promote the Club and The Trust at a major event in the town.
Well it would have been a great day if it hadn't
been for the weather! What a disappointment. Those that had a go at the shoot
out including Carl Baker and his son all seemed to enjoy it but the attendance
was dreadful because of the rain. Everything got wet and having been on site
from 8.45 until 2.15 when we abandoned ship, thankfully the carnival organisers
relented and let people pack up early, we were soaked through to the skin.
28 Jun Oh Dear, it looks like we are going
to get very wet at the Carnival on Saturday.
25 Jun Neil Prince signs from Stalybridge.
Neil previously made 1 sub appearance in the 1-0 defeat at Kettering in the
2002/03 season which qualifies him for entry into the
one sub wonder club.
He did however make a full appearance in the previous match, a 2-0 Lancs cup
defeat at Accrington which doesn't count as a "first class" game.
24 Jun
Southport Central
record added to site, thanks to Football Club History Database.
I've been trying to update various bits of BSCN
data today and it really is sad to see how poor a lot of the websites in this
league are. The obvious exception is Iain Benson's superb Stalybridge site which
has just about everything you could possibly need but most of the others are
quite frankly, poor. I can never understand why people/clubs bother having a
site if they can't be bothered updating it even with basic details.
23 Jun Despite all the uncertainty about
who will actually start in BSCN on 11 August I have still received a great
number of entries in the
Prediction League and I know there are more pending from people
waiting to see what happens, thanks to everyone for having a go.
22 Jun We are now members of Blue Square
Conference North after another name change.
Chris Lane signs for Altrincham. Peter Thomson
signs for Barrow (chuckle)
21 Jun TIY Meeting at The Grandstand Club
7.30pm start.
20 Jun Scarborough go into Liquidation and
are no more. With Boston still under threat, Lancaster relegating themselves and
others in trouble it makes you appreciate your own club just that bit more
doesn't it. Something has to be done to get this situation sorted out though it
is no advert for NL football when this keeps happening.
16 Jun Now looks like Boston are about to
go into liquidation which will mean a reprieve for Worksop, should be decided
tomorrow. This will of course mean another change to the Prediction League and
all my spreadsheets, thank you very much! You really do have to feel for the
Boston fans. I know how I felt when we were a few hours from going out of
existence in the late seventies and it isn't nice.
15 Jun Still plenty of optimism in the
Predictions League
with Southport's placing ranging from 1st to 19th and fans from lots of
clubs having a go which is good to see.
14 Jun Still trying to update all the
prices for next season. Harrogate are charging £12 to stand. Kettering are £11
with £1 extra for Premier games against Boston, Hinckley, Nuneaton and
Tamworth!!!
13 Jun Terry Smith signs permanently. I
know of at least two Southport fans who will be pleased with that signature.
9 Jun Conference AGM sees Altrincham
reprieved again with Boston placed in BSN which becomes our longest trip of the
season at 179 miles. There seems to be some doubts (in Boston) as to whether or
not Boston will even take their place in BSN. They sound like a club with big
problems. It's not even a new ground for me having made the trip there back in
the first non league season. I seem to recall the journey going on and on for
some reason. Fixtures are due out by the end of June but no definite date set.
Those who have already entered the
PREDICTION LEAGUE
may want to change their entry.
I wish the new season would come along soon.
Spending Saturday's painting your garage is not what Saturday's are for!
6 Jun Some great pledges being received,
thank you. They include £1 for every headed goal, £1 for every pen scored, £50
if the floodlights fail (I'm sure that could be sorted out) £50 for every goal
our goal keeper scores and £1 for every goal scored. Please keep them coming.
4 Jun Season Ticket sales start today.
Julia will be there at 10am on the dot to make sure of ours! She managed to get
numbers 1 and 2, needless to say she is number 1!
I'm sure things will start to get interesting this
week as Dav is back from his hols and players on contracts to 31 May are freed
up. I'm sure Carl will be on his way soon as well and hopefully we will get a
good price for him. Where will he end up?
Back to work today. Not been in since the
"Champions" League Final so can't wait to listen to whose fault it was for the
thousands of Liverpool fans travelling without tickets, storming the barriers,
making and selling forged tickets, fighting each other for tickets etc etc. I am
sure it will be the Police, UEFA or Chelsea fans to blame again!
3 Jun Trust In Yellow are inviting Pledges
to be made on events for the 2007/08 season. You can pledge on whatever you
like, examples so far received are £100 for every goal Chris Holland scores, £1
for every goal home and away in League games, £100 if we win BSN. They can be as
original or simple as you like, all you have to do is honour the Pledge. You can
send the form to me on line from
here or via trustinyellow.com Pledge forms
will also be available at all our pre-season friendlies. The amount can be
anything from 10p to £10,000 the choice is yours.
Thanks to everyone who has already had a go at the
Prediction League. Great to see so much optimism around.
2 Jun
SFCSTATS PREDICTION LEAGUE launched. A free
to enter competition in which you predict the finishing positions of all the
teams in The Blue Square North. For example if you think Southport will finish
1st and they do you will score 22 points. If you think we will finish 1st and we
finish 22nd you will score just 1 point, if we finish 3rd, you score 20 points
and so on for each team in the league. A Trophy will be awarded to the winner.
The closing date is 3pm on 18 August. It may be worth waiting until the final
composition of the league is known but you can always adjust your positions if
there are any structural changes. Don't forget to fill in all 22 places.
It was 29 years ago today................
1 Jun Connall Murtagh has now signed for
Wrexham after Southport agree to "tear up his contract" according to the Wrexham
website.
30 May Steve Burr installed as manager of
Stalybridge. That 20/1 looks a bit of a tempter as well now!
29 May Slightly different statement from
Rhyl today, it may not be a done deal after all.

28 May From the Rhyl site:
MIDFIELDER
Conall Murtagh has left Rhyl to join
Conference North club Southport, it was
revealed today.
Murtagh, 21, was made an offer that was "too
good to refuse" by Sandgrounders boss Peter
Davenport, the former Bangor City manager.
Northern
Ireland under-21 international Murtagh had
an outstanding first season at Belle Vue,
but found the lure of financial stability
while a student hard to resist.
“Conall’s a student at Manchester University
and Southport’s offer of a full-time
contract is the main reason behind his
departure,” said Rhyl boss John Hulse.
“I’d like to thank him for everything he did
at Rhyl, he was a good signing.
"He thanked us, the players, the board and
supporters for making his time so enjoyable
at Rhyl. He also told me he thought there
would be less travelling and better pitches
in the Conference North, but I disagree on
both counts.
"He might change his mind when he has to
travel to Blyth Spartans on a bleak midweek
winter night."
Murtagh started his career with Ballymena
United and Crusaders before being spotted by
Hearts. He made his Scottish League debut
while on loan at Raith Rovers in January
2005. Following his release from Tynecastle,
he spent pre-season with Sligo Rovers and
then played in the reserves at Altrincham
after arriving in Manchester as a student.
The Irishman joined Connah's Quay for 2005/6
but left at the end of the campaign and
signed for Rhyl .
Murtagh made 23 full league appearances for
the Lilywhites, scoring just one goal, but
as the season wore on he really came into
his own and emerged as a big favourite among
the fans.
26 May Carl Baker called up for National
Game X1, a well deserved honour.
25 May Friendlies update, still to be
confirmed:
17 July Away Chorley 19 July Away Prescot 21 July
Home Rochdale 24 July Away Fleetwood 25 July Home v Tranmere 28 July Home v
Macclesfield 2 Aug Home v Morecambe.
23 May Best of luck to AC Milan, please
don't mess it up this time! You can get 10/1 on Liverpoo to win on pens on
Skybet, that is buying money with their record. Can't help but laugh at the poor
unfortunate Liverpoo fans whose plane got cancelled and couldn't make the game.
Such a shame! Working in the wonderful City as I do it was quite impressive to
see the amount of red on the streets and it wasn't all blood, my singing of AC
Milan, AC Milan didn't seem to go down too well though for some reason.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to AC Milan. You
have made me a very happy man tonight!!!!!!!!! I almost wish I was going in to
work tomorrow now. I took the day off just in case they won again! Thanks to
everyone for the text messages, anyone would think I had something against
Liverpoo. Me? Never!! Of course they were robbed according to the darlings on
Radio 5, it's all the refs fault!
22 May The article below is on the superb
Altrincham news site, whoever does that site is my hero. It has everything you
need to know about NL football. Great work!
Guy Heffernan insists he won’t return to Barrow as
long as Phil Wilson is manager. The out-of-contract defender says he was offered
a non-contract deal by the Bluebirds chief last week. However, following a
season of being overlooked by Wilson and with other clubs interested, Heffernan
will look to kick-start his career elsewhere. 'He’s phoned me up and offered me
a new deal, but I don’t think I’ll take it', said the Barrow-born-and-based
23-year-old. 'He said he has to downsize the squad for next season and he wants
me to be part of the sixteen. But he never guaranteed me first-team football.
I’ve been offered first-team football at other places and on a lot better money
as well'. He added: 'I’d like to come back and play for the club, but not under
Phil, I don’t think I’ll play under him again. I just don’t like him to be
honest and I don’t think he’s good for the club'... A regular at right back
under ex-boss Lee Turnbull, Heffernan, despite being fit almost the entire
season, made just two league appearances, both as a sub... Frustrated at the way
things had worked out, Heffernan didn’t turn up for the last two games of the
season, choosing instead to play and captain Barrow Cricket Club’s second team.
The player says he was fined two weeks wages by the club as a result. 'I spoke
to Phil about three times all last season', says Heffernan. 'His man-management
skills are awful. We had an argument the season before and I think he just bore
a grudge from that. He doesn’t talk to me, I’m just like an outsider to him. Me,
Steve Ridley and Steve Flitcroft I’d say are the outsiders because we’re not his
boys - we were not people he’s brought in'. By the end of last season Heffernan,
who joined the Bluebirds in early 2004, was the only Barrow-based player in the
Barrow first-team squad. 'People will say it’s sour grapes because I never got
picked,', he said. 'It’s not a case of that. Last season I wasn’t a player, I
was basically a supporter more than anything. I want the club to do well and
will still look for their results... I know I’m good enough to play in the
team... The board had this bright idea that Phil Wilson would come in with this
brilliant record he’s had in the past and that it would rub off on Barrow...
People can say we’re now training together, but what has it actually done? We’ve
gone further down the league than when under Lee Turnbull'" reports the
NW Evening Mail
20 May Morecambe v Exeter Conf Play Off
Final at Wembley sees Morecambe progress to the Football League with a 2-1 win
after being 1-0 down. Morecambe were promoted (as Runners Up behind Marine) to
The Conference in 1994/95. Congratulations to The Shrimps. A gate of 40,043 is a
Conf Play Off final high.
19 May What a shocker of a Cup Final, I
actually fell asleep in the first half!
Mileage Chart for 2007/08 added to site.
Interesting to note that Alty travel the least miles with just 1675 (one way).
Blyth have the highest total with 3863 and Workington have 3819 which is just 2 miles fewer than we
had in Conference National. If Workington had gone through the play offs to
Conference national they would have racked up some miles, 768 to and from
Weymouth, you would struggle to do that as a part time club. Our total of 2110
is the 10th highest in the League although some of the mileages on this chart
are a bit different to those I have used in the past. 135 to Alfreton? I have it
as 97 and my total is 2008.
18 May Interesting AGM last night, very
upbeat and positive, lots of praise for the way TIY have progressed in the first
12 months.
Spoke to Dav about friendlies. They are all
subject to confirmation and amendment but as it stands they are:
17 Jul Away Chorley, 19 July Away Prescot, 21 July
Home Rochdale, 23 or 24 July Away Fleetwood 25 July Home v Tranmere, 28 July tba
4 Aug possibly a game. Macclesfield are other possible opponents.

14 May Farsley Celtic are promoted to Blue
Square National so the final make up of Blue Square North is now known. The
three highlighted will be new grounds for me although, having just seen some
pictures of the new Nuneaton ground I would suggest that if we are playing them
anytime before January 08 we will be playing at their old ground!

13 May Just when it looks like Wigan are on
the way back to where they belong, they manage to survive!
Official site states that Matt Hocking has also
signed up for next season.
12 May Just been updating all my
spreadsheets and printing them out and doing a full audit. I hadn't realised
that the 4-0 win at G&N was our best away win in our Conference career.
10 May TIY Meeting at Grandstand Club
7.30 start.
9 May Looks like Boston could be in a mess
and may not be able to take their place in BSQ Premier which would mean a
reprieve for Altrincham. I guess Boston would be allocated to BSQ North. Alty or
Boston, I know which one I would prefer to visit. Boston is a long journey!
8 May Great news from the Official Site:
HOLLAND AT HAIG AVENUE NEXT SEASON
Chris Holland signed a new contract at Haig Avenue
today. The former Preston North End, Birmingham and Newcastle midfield star has
been named the Port's new club captain by manager Peter Davenport. Holland
joined the Sandgrounders in the final third of the season from Boston United and
quickly emerged as a leader on the pitch in his midfield general role. A
delighted Peter Davenport said "Chris made a big impression in the run in and he
is a massive signing for us. Chris has plenty of experience and it shows our
supporters we intend to have quality players in our full time squad next season.
I have several irons in the fire at present and we will be announcing more news
shortly. Today we have re-signed both Chris and Michael Powell."
MICHAEL POWELL WITH PORT NEXT SEASON
Michael Powell has pledged his
future to the Port today. The versatile ex PASE Caterforce youth team graduate
who came to Haig Avenue after being released by Preston at sixteen years of age
has re-signed for next season. Peter Davenport said "Michael has tremendous
ability, he can play at right back, centre half or in midfield. I believe
Michael will develop further as a player next season.
Oxford v Exeter goes to
penalties with Exeter winning. What a great game it sounded on the radio. Those
commentators were superb, what passion they showed for their team! One rule I
would change though is that the Play Offs should never go to pens. The team finishing
highest in the table should go through.

season is now complete and can be found

organise the gallery in a more user friendly way. The photos still need
labelling which will be done in the next few days.
5 May
Southport Supporters v Southport Players & Staff at Haig Ave Kick Off
11am. Admission £4 Adults £2 Children with a £1 reduction for TIY Members. A
very lucky 11-5 win for the Players & Staff! Excellent day sees TIY raise in the
region of £800 from the event. Thank you to everyone for your support, Dave
Pennington for doing the gate and everyone at the club for their co-operation in
getting the game on. Particular thanks to the players for taking the time out to
play, it was much appreciated by all the lads who played against you.
We are hoping to stage a cricket match next! Watch
this site, Port Chat and the official club site for more details.
TIY have a photo cd
available from the game. It contains 189 jpeg images from the day and is
available for £2 to TIY members £3 to others. Will be made to order so please
contact me via e-mail or telephone to order a copy.
I will have them available at the TIY meeting on Thursday or arrangements can be
made to pick them up or drop them off at other times.
We will be playing
Kettering and Workington next season as both fail in the play offs. Telford are
also promoted. I think the Blue Square North will be quite strong next season. I
was hoping to get Kettering out of the way. The final BS North place will go to
either Farsley or Hinckley who contest the play off final. Farsley in Blue
Square National?!
4 May A strong team is promised for
tomorrow's game against TIY
Fan Profiles Updated. All that I have received are
now in the Fan Zone
Starting from
4 May 07 a number of the pages are being updated, revamped
and hopefully improved. Some links may temporarily not work
and some things may disappear but it will be worth it! NEWS
& VIEWS will provide updates. If I do take anything off that
somebody needs please feel free to get in touch with me.
3 May TIY have copies of the Gravesend
& Northfleet v Southport game available on DVD for just £5 with all the proceeds
going to TIY funds. Please contact me if you would like a copy.
1 May
The TIY auction saw myself and Jose
Mourinho win the managers job with a bid of £75. Jose now has other pressing
arrangements for Saturday. If anyone wants to outbid us and take on the role I
am happy to open it up for offers. I am sure we can raise more than £75 and all
the money will go to TIY. Contact me by e-mail or phone 077900-41514.
It will be a challenging job, a number of the players have advised me that they
are looking to "take care" of one of the team and suggested to me that I will
need to have a good physio. An early substitution will probably be needed (as
well as an ambulance) so you will be kept on your toes all day!
From The Official Site:-
SANDGROUNDERS
MAINTAIN AMBITION
PORT LOOKING TO
ACHIEVE
BOUNCEBACKABILITY
Southport Football
Club announced on
Tuesday that they
will be retaining
full time playing
status next season.
This is a highly
ambitious decision
at Haig Avenue and
shows the clubs
determination to be
highly competitive
as they kick off
next season. Manager
Peter Davenport
finished the season
with an impressive
run of performances
and the former
Manchester United
and Nottingham
Forest star has now
been given the go
ahead to build his
full time squad for
the Blue Square
North next season.
Davenport’s last
Conference home
match saw a record
home league
attendance at Haig
Avenue in 33 years
and with that amount
of enthusiasm in the
town the hope is
there will be a
winning habit at
Haig Avenue next
season.
Chairman Charlie
Clapham and Vice
Chairman Sam
Shrouder have given
the go ahead to be
full time for a
second season and
the intention is to
return to the Blue
Square Premier as
quickly as possible.
Supporters in the
town will be
impressed by the
clubs decision to
start the season as
possibly the only
Blue Square North
club operating as a
full time club.
Kettering Town are
currently full time
and are now in the
play offs aiming to
achieve Blue Square
Premier status.
Chairman Charlie
Clapham stated “
Following what has
been a very
difficult
transitional season
from Part Time to
Full Time to reverse
this after one
season could be seen
as a negative
policy, the manager
believes that to
remain Full Time
gives the club the
best chance of
regaining our
National status at
the earliest
opportunity, the
club will operate on
an affordable budget
which the manager is
fully supportive of.
We believe our
supporters will see
our course of action
as being very
positive laying down
our marker that we
must get back in the
National division as
a priority”
29 Apr Blue Square North 07/08 will
comprise of the following teams based on the assumption that Witton will be
promoted from the Unibond, it could be Telford, Marine or Matlock. Also assuming
Kettering will move up, this could also be Farsley, Hinckley or Workington:-

Weymouth look set to go into Administration
tomorrow and start next season with a 10 point deduction, what a ridiculous
situation this is becoming and something that needs investigating immediately.
Our combined home and away average attendance
is 1592, our best ever in NL football, helped of course by the gates at Oxford
and York. The home average of 1200 is 44 down on last season.
28 Apr Away Exeter City.
EXETER 2 SOUTHPORT 1 ATT 6670 Our highest ever NL league gate and the
23rd best ever in the history of The Conference.. A super first half showing was
followed by a backs to the wall second as Exeter launched wave after wave of
attacks. You could tell how tense the Exeter players and fans were in the first
half but they certainly came out all guns blazing for the second period. An
excellent turn out of 109 Southport fans made their voices head in the first
half in particular. It was a brilliant atmosphere in the second once Exeter
scored, certainly the loudest I have heard at a Southport game for a long time.
Excellent journey down and back by car. The coach was also full which
considering the position we were in is a great show of support from the
Southport faithful. It's times like this that the club need our support and to
all those who have stuck with it, well done. I know there is at least one person
who has seen all the first class games and another who has missed just one,
there may be others. I've just missed the two games, at Dagenham when no lift
was available, and at Gravesend when illness struck. I will be doing my season
summary in the next few days. The Exeter fans are full of praise for our
following yesterday and we seem to have gained an appreciation society. When you
think about it, we had 109 there out of an average home gate of 1200. Exeter had
180 at Haig Ave out of an average gate of 3627.9.08% of our average home gate in
a meaningless gam against 4.96 % of their average home gate, not bad going that!
Burscough gain promotion and Leigh survive,
at least the travel next season will be a lot less. I'm sure the fans that those
two teams will bring to Haig Ave will help our average attendance next season!!!
It will be interesting to see which end some of our "fans" go in when we meet Burscough.
27 Apr Tickets look to be selling well
in Exeter. The official site states only a handful remain and the forum users
estimates range from 3800 to 7000. I have advised them that we will probably
have around the 100 mark in attendance.
26 Apr TIY 1ST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION &
GRAND AUCTION at The
Grandstand Club. Over £1400 raised. Many thanks to everyone for their support.
25 Apr I think someone needs to get a message to Exeter, they seem to think
we are bringing 2-300 on Saturday. The coach is full but only the one. There
will be a few of us in cars and a few exiles but with the match situation as it
is now, no more than 120 I guess. They reckon on having sold over 6000 tickets
already.
24 Apr Our fate could finally be decided tonight when Halifax take on
Crawley and Grays play Kidderminster. Our fate is indeed sealed as both Halifax
and Grays win to send us down. I know it's been on the cards for a long time but
the 4 game winning run gave us a bit of hope but all to no avail and its Blue
Square North next season.
ONLY
1 coach will now run to Exeter so if you haven't booked and paid I'm afraid you
will be unable to travel with TIY. Apologies to anyone who has booked but we can
only allow the first 49 who paid to go.

22 Apr Having broken our home NL attendance record yesterday it looks highly
likely that we will beat our away record, set earlier this season at Oxford, at
next Saturday's match at "The Real St James's Park" Seems a strange carry on
here. The game is all ticket for Home fans and they are stopping selling them on
Friday night at the request of the Police. We will turn up on the day and be
able to walk in? Now if I was an Exeter fan and couldn't get in wouldn't I just
go in the away end? I hope there will be plenty of stewards and police on hand!
I understand no seating is being made available for away fans.
21 Apr Home v York City. Trust In
Yellow are sponsoring the matchday programme. What a BIG game this has become,
surely we must be near the 2000 mark, depends on the turnout from York and the
weather I guess.
SOUTHPORT 0 YORK CITY 1 ATTENDANCE
3206-Highest ever home NL league attendance. Seasons home average attendance is
exactly 1200. 752 Standing York fans with a good number in the stand as well but
still a great turn out by the Southport people. No complaints about the pen or
the sending off and after that we rarely threatened. Virtually impossible to get
out of it now I would think, particularly as Exeter need a win to confirm their
Play Off spot next week. Could all be over on Tuesday evening if Halifax win and
Grays get a draw. To think that we are going in to the last week of the season
still not down is a great turnaround considering we thought we would be
relegated at the end of March at one point. The damage was done in the first
half of the season though and it has been an uphill struggle since then to peg
it back. Droylsden are promoted to Conference National. Burscough, Witton and
Telford fight it out for promotion to Conference North.
Best home league attendance for 33 years,15
April 1974 when 9504 attended for the visit of Oldham. The nearest we have come
since then was a 2834 v Crewe in 77/78 and a 2750 v Swansea in the same season.

Talked about as the biggest game at Haig Ave
since the FA Trophy Semi 9 years ago? It promises to be a tense affair. I just
hope the pressure doesn't get to everyone on and off the pitch. York will bring
a few and with all the free tickets and media attention it should be well
attended. Could make the Top 20 home attendance chart. I hope everyone gets
behind the team, puts aside all the gripes of early season and shows the support
we need. Even if we go a goal down as we did against Burton the support will be
crucial.
