JANUARY 2007

31 Jan Chris Holland signs from Boston United Matt Hocking from Fisher Athletic and Mark Duffy from Prescot Cables are also added to the squad.

29 Jan What a great attendance at the Oxford v Rushden game, 5654 for a televised Monday night game when your team are on a slump is some going. The atmosphere is a lot different mind you from when we went there and what a bad result it was for us.

28 Jan From sgb-this is from someone who doesn't support the team, probably a Liverpoo armchair supporter. What chance do we stand when this is the view that is held. Having said that the standard of literacy leaves a lot to be desired so maybe not that much to worry about. We should build council houses on the ground after that display from a person who wasn't even there. I've read some garbage in the last 24 hours but this one beats them all!
Sir knight says: Sun 28th Jan 2007, 01:26 PM
its disgraceful, i don't support southport as such but i still like to see how they are doing.
im surprised how awful they play even when that many people show up to support their home team or just for entertainment.
and yes, they should just get rid of the team and build council houses there, i think more people would go and look at the council houses then go watch southport again after that display:)

Thanks to everyone who has contacted me today about various matters, I will reply as soon as I can, I always try to respond to all e-mails received but I have had quite a few today! One thing I can provide quickly is the number of players we have used per season:-

27 Jan Home v Forest Green Rovers 3pm. Forest Green visit today on the back of 3 straight victories which has seen them leap to 13th place. I think after we beat them only a few weeks ago their fans had them written off as certs for relegation.

This time last season we were bottom with 20 points from 26 games today we are next to bottom with 24 points and with 4 going down this season things aint looking good.

SOUTHPORT 1 FOREST GREEN 2-What can you say we are simply not good enough are we? You can argue that after the first 19 minutes we didn't deserve to lose and hit the bar twice and had one cleared off the line in the last minute but lose we did and it's looking bleak. It was the 12th time we have lost by 1 goal this season. Jon Newby makes his debut.

Quite a reaction on Port Chat and sgb to this defeat. The ones who want us to do badly are loving it so that they can say I told you so, the ones that turn up occasionally are loving it so that they can slag the club off, the ones that moan all the time are well, moaning all the time. I honestly didn't think we were that bad today but it is clear that this season we simply have not been good enough and the frustration that is coming out tonight is to be expected. I do wish people wouldn't boo the team at games though we are supposed to support them aren't we. I was as frustrated as the next person today but to slag individuals off is not the thing to do during a game in my opinion. There are people calling for Charlie to leave as well. What must Dav be thinking he has come to!

I have finally got my own thread on Port Chat, downhill from now on I fear!

26 Jan Jon Newby signs from Wrexham. If he starts tomorrow he will become the 33rd player to be used this season, the same number as we used all last season.

25 Jan Good news, Rigoglioso has signed for Forest Green and who do we play next?! You can see it coming can't you!

24 Jan WANTED, A STRIKER! Please not Rigoglioso, his one "appearance" in a Southport shirt at Accrington ranks as the worst performance I have ever seen by a Southport player.

The next 5 games really are make or break. I reckon we need to win 4 of them to be in with a chance of survival because the big guns are on their way after that. Having said that none of the current top 5 sides have beaten us yet, what a strange season we are having.

Adam Dugdale became NL player number 556 at Crawley with Mark Birch becoming 557 at Morecambe and the 32nd player we have used this season. Birch was also the 1200th player to have played for Southport. Chris Lane made his 150th appearance at Morecambe.

23 Jan Away Morecambe 7.45pm.  Weather forecast is for snow! How about us being 2-1 up at the 80 minute mark and the pitch starts to freeze or get covered in snow and the ref calls it off, now that would be bad luck and I apologise now if it happens!

MORECAMBE 0 SOUTHPORT 0-A valuable point but with all the others winning it looks bleak. Tony Gray looked to have a pull which will keep him out for a while, we are striker less particularly as Dino has now said he won't play again. It was a shocker of a game which for any neutral in the ground must have been dire to watch. A point is a point and it was, to me, a bonus point. Adam Dugdale was my MOTM for an outstanding display closely followed by the ever improving Ciaran Donnelly.

Very clever music played by Morecambe at half time. We'll have to have a good think about how we can reciprocate next season, if we stay up of course!

21 Jan Just reading the Crawley forum and their fans are fairly complimentary about our showing yesterday but I'm sorry, the keeper very definitely DID handle the ball outside the area. I was bang in line with it and he picked it up a good 18 inches outside the box. The Crawley fans we spoke to after the game were also impressed with our showing and almost apologetic about getting the win but alas it counts for nothing.

For the record the games we have conceded in the last minute or added time this season are Halifax, Oxford, Aldershot, Forest Green, Northwich, Salisbury and Crawley 8 points dropped and an FA Trophy exit. That's 7 games, the other 4 last 10 minute games were Stafford, Morecambe, Kidderminster and Grays, another 4 points dropped. 12 more points and we would be near the play offs!

Carl has now picked up 4 league match bookings plus the one in the Lancs Cup game against Burscough.

Tony Gray now has 5 league goals and 1 in the Trophy. Dino has also got 6 although his first at Oxford was never really his goal so TG should be joint top of the list. What a run of form he has found. I'm sure with an experienced striker alongside him he would go on and get a few more.

20 Jan Away Crawley. CRAWLEY TOWN 2 SOUTHPORT 1 Rob is not at all happy tonight. With 90 minutes on the clock the Crawley keeper picked the ball up outside his area whilst still in play, carried it back into the box, kicked it up the field and they scored the winner. How much more bad luck can we have?

No Rob wasn't happy at that and conceding yet another late goal, the 11th in the last 10 minutes of a game this season. 550 mile round trip this week to end up with nothing from what I thought was our best all round away performance of the season. It's getting hard to take. As I reported to Julia above, the keeper clearly picked the ball up outside the area, launched it downfield and they scored and that was it, 89 mins 57 seconds, thank you. Some fans in the 63 Southport followers thought we should have had a pen when Bake's was pulled to the ground by the Crawley defender but he definitely got the first pull in and that's what the referee gave, correctly. The luck just isn't going our way at the moment I'm afraid.  A great journey down and back with Dan, Brian and Doug, no road problems and only a brief shower when we were on the M25. It may be 260 miles but it is door to door motorway and a journey that can be undertaken in 4 hours with a clear run. Highlight of the day was Boydy's sublime piece of skill that drew applause from the Crawley fans in the stand, eat your heart out Johan!

16 Jan Peter Davenport is appointed as our new manager. Welcome on board Peter. I wonder how long it will be before we get the complaints. Just read Port Chat, the usual suspects are at it already but nothing compared to the sgb forum. You really do wonder why we bother having a football team in Southport, it just seems that everyone wants to criticise every single thing that is done and the most annoying thing is that half of them don't go to the games. There are a couple of contributors to the sgb forum whose lives must be very sad if all the can do is continually dig at CC and not see any positives at all. Why not support the club, get involved in making the improvements you want to see, I tried it, it works and you feel so much better for it!

Peter joins Trust In Yellow to become member 329.

Report From Alan Jones www.southport.gb.com

Davenport to be named new Southport FC manager

Peter Davenport with Haydn Preece

Southport FC - With Southport.gb.com

Peter Davenport will today be named the new manager of Southport Football Club.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland striker resigned from his position in charge UniBond League One side Colwyn Bay yesterday evening.

Davenport, who was caretaker boss at Haig Avenue in 1997, has been selected to succeed Paul Cook, ending thirteen days of doubt and indecision.

The Sandgrounders were last night waiting to receive the all clear from the North Wales club and plan to introduce their new man to the press later this afternoon.

He is expected to be assisted by Alan Lewer, the former Forest Green Rovers boss.

Having spent most of his seven-year managerial career in the Welsh Premier League, Davenport now is charged with the immediate task of preserving Southport’s Nationwide Conference life.

The 45-year-old played under the stewardship of Brain Clough, Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson, but with little practical experience of non-league’s top tier, he is faced with a daunting assignment.

Haig Avenue has been a desolate place this season and with just five league wins, Southport currently sit three points adrift of safety having played more games than two of the sides around them.

With only fifteen days until transfer activity concludes, Davenport has got to make a rapid assessment of his inherited squad before attempting to plunder the players who he thinks will help Southport avoid relegation.

It is undoubtedly a surprise decision and one that will provoke much debate. There will be questions as to whether the new boss can quickly recruit the required standard of signings and indeed if he has the credentials to lead a surge to survival.

But if Davenport is to accomplish mission improbable, then he must be given the wholehearted backing of the Haig Avenue support, regardless of any doubts that may have arisen.

Davenport is the club’s third full-time manager since the Sandgrounders lost their Football League status in 1978. The previous two - Cook and Mike Walsh - accrued just eleven wins from 31 matches between them.

The former Nottingham Forest player, however, is no stranger to Haig Avenue. Having scored eighteen goals in 49 appearances for the Sandgrounders towards the end of his playing career, he temporarily held the managerial reigns prior to the arrival of Ronnie Moore in 1997.

But that was Davenport’s last participation in Conference football. After playing for and then briefly managing Macclesfield Town, he spent four seasons as boss of Bangor City, before a switch to the UniBond Leagues at the start of this campaign.

Like his predecessor at Haig Avenue, Davenport enjoyed a playing career in the upper echelons of the English game. After being plundered from the West Cheshire Leagues by Nottingham Forest in 1981, he averaged a goal every other game during his five years at the City Ground and was capped once by England at senior level.

Born in Birkenhead, Davenport joined Manchester United in 1986 and netted twenty-two strikes following a £570, 000 move. After a short period at Middlesbrough, he was a defeated FA Cup finalist with Sunderland in 1992, before two seasons in Scotland with Airdrie and St. Johnstone.

Davenport then played for Stockport County, before representing Southport and Macclesfield Town, where he returned as manager in January 2000 as manager. His tenure at Moss Rose lasted just under twelve months and was sacked for refusing work in a capacity as joint-manager having won just thirteen of his 49 games in charge.

In 2001, Davenport took charge of Welsh Premier League side Bangor City, who he led to two successive third-place finishes, but resigned following a poor start to the 2005-2006 campaign.

Having made the move to Colwyn Bay in the summer, he leaves the club placed seventh in UniBond League One - three tiers below the Conference. The Seagulls are currently two points short of a play-off place, but have won just two of their last eleven games, losing a third of all matches played this season

Keith Alexander has left Peterborough today, now that would be an interesting appointment!

Thanks to everyone who has contacted me about the TIY coaches, your messages of support and encouragement to keep them going have been much appreciated. The offers of cash to reimburse our losses have been appreciated but there is no way people who had nothing to do with the situation will pay any money. The cash is not the issue, it was the failure of people to let any TIY committee member know that they weren't turning up that made me angry on Saturday. I have now calmed down and rest assured the coaches will still run, with a couple of modifications to the booking system.

14 Jan Brilliant banner from Alan at sgb!

Southport FC - With Southport.gb.com

Seems like whoever is appointed is already being written off by the Port Chatterati. Give Mr/Mrs x a chance for goodness sake, the last thing we need is another anti-manager campaign from day one. Whichever poor soul takes over let's just get behind them for once.

13 Jan FA Trophy 2nd Round Away at Salisbury City-Coach departs Haig Ave 7.00am Just 2 places remaining. Cost will be less than £20.From The Official Site "Salisbury City have confirmed that there will be no bar facilities at the ground available to away supporters on Saturday. Segregation will also be in operation, and the area for away supporters is uncovered. It is advisable for supporters who are travelling to wrap up well" Who has tipped them off about our hooligan element then?

SALISBURY 2 SOUTHPORT 1 Absolutely gutted. I hate late goals in cup competitions at the best of times but this was just beyond belief. The board goes up 37 seconds into added time to say 2 mins of added time. We are comfortable and all looking forward to a replay (excpet me who was thinking about having to spend all day Sunday doing the programme!) Salisbury start to look as though they will score but the 2 minutes passes as does the 3 and we expect the whistle but no, 3 minutes 58 seconds into added time they score. I always wonder in these situations when a ref blows immediately you kick off had the 90 minutes actually passed and he was waiting for a break in play or did he play over the time. It happened at Halifax earlier this season as well. Cue abuse from the "corporate boxes" above us and the most horrendous looking woman giving us the verbals. The whole Salisbury experience is one to forget. We arrived at the ground at 12.40 on a coach with 33 on it when 47 had booked, It was miles from anywhere, there were stewards coming out of your ears because we had told them we were bringing 250/300 fans. Stewards who had been brought in from Portsmouth at a cost to Salisbury. I did tell them we would only be bringing 75, I was wrong there were 92 as there were far more exiles in attendance than I anticipated. Looking at that 92 I think there were the 33 on the coach and maybe only 6 others that live in Southport or its surrounds  We were not allowed in the ground, we were not allowed in the bar so a good few bushes got a watering as people were quite desperate after a long coach journey! What a shambles. There were some very friendly locals who stopped and had a chat as we froze outside the ground but on the whole I'm afraid Salisbury is not going down on my favourite places to go to list.

As for the game itself we were very poor for the opening 20 minutes but then once we scored we should have gone on and won the game. Tony Gray had his best game in a Southport shirt so far, he was superb and whilst Bakes was quieter than of late he caused mayhem on a number of occasions. Dino didn't seem to know where to play himself, he was all over the place. The major talking point came in the second half when their keeper brought down Tony Gray, should it have been a sending off? I have certainly seen them given. He was past the keeper but there was a player covering but it was violent conduct and denied Tony a goalscoring opportunity, debatable. One position we do need to look at is the keeper, Paul Harrison is probably one of the best shot stoppers we have had and shows great positioning skills but throw a high ball into the 6 yard box and your heart goes in your mouth every time and so it proved with the winning goal. I'm sure any scout watching that game for any future opponents will quickly get that played on.

I have no idea who got booked in all the melee at the end of the game but the card seemed to get shown to a few people. My stats will be updated once I confirm who got the cards. Ken Hilton confirms it was Dino and Boydy that were booked to add to Michael Powell's earlier booking.

As for the new manager, Alan Lewer was in the stand today and was seen talking to Haydn, a Lewer/Mutch partnership maybe?

12 Jan Team have travelled. Game On subject to there not being a Saturday deluge of rain, snow. sleet etc!

11 Jan TIY Meeting at Grandstand Club 7.30pm. Anyone wanting to book or pay for the forthcoming coach trips can see me in the GS Club tonight.

Salisbury have been advised there are 250/300 supporters travelling hence the decision to close the bar. 75 at the most! Prospects of the match going ahead look a little better, forecast is decent and the Salisbury secretary has advised pitch is currently ok so unless there is a deluge we should be alright. I have asked to be kept informed.

Still waiting to here who the new boss will be.

9 Jan Another Conference club in turmoil as Weymouth announce sweeping cutbacks. Once again, for all those that knock Charlie, look very closely at Weymouth, it's all very well having ambition but it has to be sustainable, can our gates sustain full time football on a long term basis. Worth thinking about it.

8 Jan There are occasions when it's quite nice being in work and today was one particularly around 1.30 with the FA Cup Draw being on. Those wonderful football supporters of Liverpoo weren't interested in it for some reason.

7 Jan I notice Sean Doherty and Francois Dubourdeau were both on the bench for Accrington yesterday.

6 Jan Home v Grays 3pm. If Bake's plays it will be his 100th game. SOUTHPORT 3 GRAYS ATHLETIC 1 The combined caretaker managership team of Whitehall and Maamria see us through to a well deserved 3-1 win with goals from Donnelly, Gray and man of the moment Baker in his 100th game. What a great run of form Carl is on at the moment. The gate of 810 was our lowest of the season and included just 27 away fans. It was good to see players actually playing in their best positions today. Great credit to Boydy a known friend of Paul Cook's, he could have given up but he was excellent today and if only he could get fit I still maintain he would be the best player at the club after Bakes. It has been remarked elsewhere but I do agree that the players seemed to play without as much fear today and were able to express themselves more. Once again I'm not getting carried away as to be frank Grays were bad and not a patch on the Grays team that tore us apart at their place earlier in the season and at Haig Ave last season but a win is a win. Some good performances today, Rowland playing at centre back is were he belongs, Powell in the centre of midfield is were he belongs and Carl roaming is what he does best. As for MOTM, I know its getting boring but for a record fourth game on the run and to celebrate his 100th game it has to be Bakes. Lets keep our fingers crossed that we can hold on to him for the remaining 25 days of the January transfer window. I wonder what value you would put on Carl right now? The day has just got a whole lot better as well with Liverpool going out of the FA Cup. YES!!

We are now on 1696 league goals in NL football, any offers on the 1700th.

5 Jan Wouldn't you sometimes like to get hold of some of the people who post their comments on the excellent articles Alan Jones writes on sgb. and talk to them face to face. Tony57 is a prime example, if he (or she) would just take an interest in what is going on off the field to improve things then he (or she) may just for once have a good word to say about the club. I know we need all the support we can get but when someone is so bitter and twisted you really do wonder why they bother don't you. Also Bev Gregory in the Visiter, another who constantly moans, I would suggest he opens his eyes a bit and then retracts his statement! Maybe Bev and Tony are one of the same?

4 Jan Disappointed to see that Sean Doherty has left the club but only to be expected. We really are down to the bare bones now:-
John Bagnall res will be on the bench
Carl Baker 1  Superstar
Francis Barry 2  not yet started a game
Liam Blakeman inj
Mark Boyd 3 Is he fit?
Sean Clancy 4  must surely get a chance now
Ciaran Donnelly 5  loan
Francois Dubourdeau inj  loan but injured
Joe Fowler 6  In and out the team
Tony Gray 7 Must start
Paul Harrison 8
Lee Hoolickin 9
Danny Kirkup 10  loan
Chris Lane 11
Kevin Lee 12 Has 5 bookings
Noureddine Maamria susp
James Olsen 13  Bit part player
Sean Paterson 14
