ARCHIVE NEWS: SEPTEMBER 04 to DECEMBER 05   JANUARY 06 to APRIL 06   MAY 06 to AUG 06

SEPT 06 to DEC 06   JAN 07   FEB 07   MAR 07   APR 07

27 Feb Tonight's games Grays v St Albans 2-1, Cambridge v Forest Green 1-1 & Halifax v Northwich 0-2. Down one place as Grays win takes them out of the drop zone and put St Alban's in it. A BIG game on 10 March!

26 Feb Liam wasn't booked.

25 Feb Mark Boyd picked up his 5th booking of the season to gain himself a suspension  Need to check the bookings out with Ken Hilton as I thought that Liam Blakeman was booked in "the brawl" but the BBC site doesn't show it.

The Cambridge Official site's match report is full of errors, as was their preview, and well worth a laugh.

If you go on youtube you can see Blake's goal from yesterday.

Player Lists Updated. Attendances Over 2000 Updated

24 Feb Away Cambridge United. Coach departure time 8am from Haig Ave. £20. The coach is running and filling fast. What a game this has now become, if we win, we can go above Cambridge. Looks like we will be able to stand up this year as the seating area is being taken up by people who have taken up the offer of free tickets. This offer was made to residents of a couple of regions around Cambridge and has attracted 1500 applications to date. Terrace prices are £12, £8 concession and £3 under 16's.

CAMBRIDGE UTD 2 SOUTHPORT 2 Before the game we would have been happy with the point but when we went in 2-1 up at half time our thoughts were on winning it as the Cambridge defence were at sixes and sevens and we were getting through them at will. A change in tactics however meant we were subjected to a second half bombardment from The U's and hanging on for grim death at the end. Mark Duffy was my MOTM for his first half super show. It was difficult to pick out anyone who played well for 90 minutes. A good day out, long but enjoyable. A great turn out on the coach with 45 travelling and only 1 no show which is an improvement. We were able to drop the price to just £15 for TIY members. The gate of 3444 included 117 in the Southport enclosure. We have now drawn our last 6 games when we have played in front of over 2000 fans, 4 of them have been a 2-2 draw. Chris Lane's sending off should result in him getting a hefty fine, why he had to run 30 yards across the pitch to get involved in something that had nothing to do with him is beyond me, this was on the day he moved into 9th place (ahead of Leroy Dove) in our all time NL appearance list, 38th place in all.

23 Feb Interesting preview of the match on the Cambridge Official site, see how many errors you can spot, I found a few!

22 Feb TIY meeting at Grandstand Club 7.30pm.

21 Feb Home v Tranmere Rovers Liverpool Senior Cup 7.45pm. Prices £7 adults, £4 concessions

SOUTHPORT 1 TRANMERE 3.Some promising youngsters on show tonight in what to me was nothing more than a "let's get it out the way" game. Much better option than staying in and watching some Mickey Mouse game on TV though. Tranmere were certainly a physical outfit with the number 10 Craig Curran being one of the most narky players you have ever come across, certainly a boy with attitude! Sean Paterson gets our goal in the 79th minute to set up a lively last 10 minutes with the crowd roaring the lads on. I was just hoping we didn't have extra time myself!

20 Feb Burton v Tamworth, Northwich v Altrincham, Stafford v Stevenage will be of interest tonight, let's hope for Home, Home, Away wins. Tamworth lose, Stafford lose and Alty draw so we drop back down to 23rd, not a bad night though. Alty equalise in the 90th minute. it really is tight down at the bottom. Stafford have the Conference's lowest gate of the season, 653. Woking's gate of just 851 is their lowest of the season by a mile.

17 Feb Home Aldershot Town. Ref today is Karl Evans, one of the best in the Conference in my opinion. A few reports are suggesting that Mark Duffy is suspended for the game today. I have checked the FA site and it says suspended for one game from 27 Jan so I would think that he has already served his ban?

SOUTHPORT 1 ALDERSHOT 0 A most welcome win but it was tense again at the end. We move up a place at long last as well. The only down side was that both Bakes and Steve Rowland picked up their 5th bookings of the season. It was a Liam Blakeman goal after 26 minutes that seperated the sides in a game that was quite enjoyable. Blake's was my MOTM for his tireless display and his goal. A great reaction from Dav at the end who shook every players hand or in some cases gave them a hug! He also seems to be getting the crowd on his side. I hear from within that he has also instilled a lot of confidence in the lads which is great to hear. A word for the much maligned Kevin Lee who had a great game today and put in a very solid showing, keep it going Kev a few more like that please.

Tickets will also be available for the Legends night on 16 March see 16 Mar for full details.

16 Feb I will be in the Club Shop in the afternoon from about 2ish, if anyone wants to book coach travel please feel free to drop in. Woking game is now on the Saturday.

15 Feb Joe Fowler joins Droylsden. I'm sure Joe will fit in well at Droylsden and wish him well for the future.

Thank you to everyone who has contacted me about our plan to write a book on Southport's Non League years. It is going to be a big project and all contributions no matter how big or small will be welcomed by Dan and I. We are obviously going to use a lot of the stats from this site but we also want some real life stories about our players, fans, managers, chairmen etc. I have had some great stuff sent through already but anything will be welcomed. If you have any unusual stories or pictures or anecdotes please get in touch via my e-mail address or pop in the Club Shop on any match day and say hello.

13 Feb Burscough v Southport Friendly 7.30pm. I guess this game will be used to let Dav have a look at some of the fringe players. On an absolutely horrible night weather wise we lost 1-0 to a super strike by Leady after 47 minutes. The starting line up was, Bagnall, Lane, Clancy, Powell, Lee, Hocking, Boyd, Blakeman, Duffy, Newby & Paterson. among the subs were Chris Holland, Rowland who came on for an injured Matt Hocking, Mark Birch and several young lads whose names were Mark Houghton, Adam Howard and Alec Ward but they are in need of some clarification as it all got a bit confusing towards the end! Considering the amount of rain that fell the pitch held up remarkably well.

12 Feb It's funny but no matter how many times I look over this site there is always something to add, change or amend. Today I noticed I had a picture of Paul Tait alongside Tony Gray's profile! A few unhappy Liverpool (l for Steve) fans at work today made for a good day in the office.

11 Feb Squad Details updated.

10 Feb Away Tamworth. Coach will be £12 in advance, £15 on the day to Trust members. GAME ON AS LONG AS THERE IS NO FURTHER HEAVY RAIN. A brilliant effort by all the people at Tamworth. From what I had heard on Thursday there was no chance of this game going ahead. They had people at the ground until 11pm last night trying to get the pitch cleared. Ironically it is now waterlogging that is the only threat. Thank you to everyone involved.

TAMWORTH 1 SOUTHPORT 1 A goal by Carl Baker, his fifth in the league this season gave us the lead only to be pegged back 13 minutes later. The draw was a banker and I hope everyone who I told to back it did! I quite enjoyed this game and the draw was just about a fair result. The Tamworth fans are quite complimentary about our showing. It was good to see Boydy back at his best and he won my MOTM award. Not too much else to say about this one. A good following of 166 took to the roads.

This article by Andy Kelly failed to appear in the programme so I have reproduced it here:- Things you (don’t) need to know about…Tamworth

The Team Rock bottom at the time of writing with a couple of games in hand over ourselves. Goal scoring has been a real problem for The Lambs this season and supporters will be hoping that the money generated from their FA Cup run can be put to good use.

The Town Tamworth is the home of the historic Tamworth Castle and Moat House. Other attractions include the Snowdome, the first real-snow indoor ski slope in Western Europe, and Drayton Manor Theme Park.

The town's main industries include logistics, engineering, clothing, brick, tile and paper manufacture. It was also home to the Reliant car company, which produced the famous three-wheeled Robin model and the Scimitar sports car for several decades. The site of the former factory has now been transformed into a modern housing estate advertised as "Scimitar Park".

The Ground The Lamb Ground is a small, unspectacular venue with a capacity of just 4,065. There is a tidy little stand that straddles the halfway line of the pitch and contains 518 seats. The rest of the ground is comprised of covered terracing with the visiting fans housed at the covered end behind the goal. Admission prices are £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

Directions Leave the M42 at Junction 10 and take the A5 towards Tamworth. Follow the A5 bypass into the town and take the turn for the town centre. Follow the signs towards the Snow Dome and Glascote/Amington. After passing the Snow Dome on your left, you should see the ground on your right. There is a fair sized car park at the ground, which costs £1. Alternatively a number of fans park in the large free Snow Dome car park and walk across to the ground.

Fact To Impress Your Traveling Companions With Tamworth was once the proud capital of Mercia, the largest of all English countries of its time.

Update From The Tamworth site:-

Friday update: after an afternoon of clearing snow, a pitch inspection will take place tomorrow morning (Saturday) but volunteers are sought to help clear the pitch of snow from approx 8.15am Although most of the country lies under a few centimeters of snow at the time of writing, it is hoped that the wintry weather will not disrupt the football on Saturday and allow Southport to visit The Lamb for a crunch Conference clash. Kick off is scheduled for 3pm Volunteers are asked to make themselves available on Saturday morning to help clear the pitch - bring a spade and suitable clothes and footwear! If Saturday's game does not go ahead a rearranged date of Tuesday February 27th has been tentatively agreed however both sides are hoping this will not have to be the case.

8 Feb TIY Meeting 7.30 Grandstand Club.

7 Feb Aldershot did us a favour last night by beating Grays 1-0. Grays are really getting dragged into the mix for the bottom 4 now. Updated League Table HERE

6 Feb Having spent the last two days on trains travelling firstly to London and then Glasgow, it's good to get back to normality and see that nothing has changed. Quite a reaction on the Alty forum though. I hadn't realised that there had been so much fuss about events at the end of the game on Saturday. One of their more "vocal" contributors has now said he isn't going to any more games because of his encroachment on to the pitch at the end.

3 Feb Home v Altrincham 3pm. If ever there was a six pointer for us this is it, a win and who knows, a defeat and things won't look too bright! 11.30am Update Just been at the ground and the sun has burnt the frost away and the fog has cleared. Just a couple of miles from the ground where I live it remains quite foggy but not enough to threaten the game at this stage.

SOUTHPORT 2 ALTRINCHAM 1 Maybe our luck has changed at last. In what was a very entertaining game we were hanging on a bit at the end but just for once we hung on for a win, I bet everyone was expecting another late goal. Paul Harrison's superb penalty save could prove a turning point That's 3 pens awarded against us at home all of which have been missed.. If we had gone one down the heads may have dropped and who knows but Bake's goal deep in to added time, it was 46 mins 15 secs into 1 minute of added time by the same ref as we had at Halifax, was just what we needed. The second half saw us playing some real quality football for a good period of time and Jon Newby got his first goal in a Southport shirt in only his second game. This was our 1700th Non League goal. We then had our customary last 10 minute panic and allowed Alty back in to the game but we took the points but gave a fair few fans heart murmers.

Sounds like both goalkeepers were attempting to wind the opposition fans up today. Coburn was his usual self and we expect nothing different from him but Harri was at it as well by all accounts, they do ask for trouble. Great support from behind the goal, it does seem to make a difference when we kick towards the Scarisbrick end in the second half. Onwards to Tamworth who also won today and another true six pointer. Draw anyone?

36 players now used this season, 561 in total.

2 Feb I am hoping to update the player details next week. There have been that many comings and goings, I simply gave up trying but hopefully things will settle down a bit and I can get back to updating the list.

I have had a number of people contact me over the last couple of days about not being able to access Port Chat, Whilst being an avid reader of Port Chat, I have nothing to do with the site but Mr Port Chat has advised the following:-

"The IP Address on Port Chat's server has changed. This means that your ISP and/or your computer has a cached version of the old IP address. If you still can't access it you may need to flush your dns cache. In Windows XP open up a command prompt and type
ipconfig /flushdns  Alternatively try www.portchat.net/index.php"

1 Feb Very interesting CE meeting with Dav putting in a last minute appearance. Considering the guy had been at the club until gone midnight the day before doing his bit on behalf of the club his appearance was all the more creditable. What a difference to the previous holder of the poison chalice. Easy to talk to and most approachable. He handled the night well. You can't win though, the moanerati still complain that they didn't have enough notice of his attendance. The CE meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, note your diaries now, Hang on though, they are a positive thing being carried out by the club to look at new ideas to improve the club and its running so people won't like to attend these just in case the hear of something that the club do well. Make no mistake I am one of the biggest critics of the way the club has been run in the past and there are still things we can do better but why not do as I have done and try and get the things you want to complain about sorted out, it is highly therapeutic and hey who knows you may actually make a positive contribution instead of the constant digs at the club. Next meeting will be on 1 March 7pm in the Grandstand Club, try it, you may even enjoy it!
