NAME: Adam Stirling FIRST HOME GAME EVER SEEN : I'm
not quite sure, but the first game I can definitely remember going to was the
3-1 win over Shepshed in the 1990-91 season. FIRST AWAY GAME EVER SEEN
1991-92 ATS Lancs Trophy final against Great Harwood Town at Burnden Park (the
less said about the result the better). My first league game was the 6-1
drubbing of Chorley in 1992-93, one of the best performances by a Southport side
that I have seen. WORST GAME EVER SEEN The 2-0
FA Trophy defeat at Colwyn Bay in 1997 was particularly bad. Luckily I have
forgotten a lot of the bad games, but for some reason this one stands out. BEST OCCASIONS : I'd say the FA Trophy semi-final v Slough. The fact that we won on aggregate and were on our way to Wembley was, to me, better than the Wembley experience itself. It was something I could never have envisaged us doing, and that day it was as though all of my dreams had come true. WORST OCCASIONS Watching our relegation on Sky Sports after my employer at the time wouldn't let me take the day off work. Seeing all the latest scores and results roll in on that day was heartbreaking FAVOURITE EVER PLAYER Paul Comstive. Tough-tackling, skillful, capable of scoring goals from midfield and a local lad to boot. What more could you ask for? FUNNIEST MOMENT WATCHING SFC Seeing people slipping on the muddy banks of the river Irwell whilst they were trying to urinate in it at the FA Cup game in Ramsbotton in 1998 BEST GOAL SEEN SCORED BY SOUTHPORT PLAYER Mark Schofield v Barrow, FA Cup 4th qualifying round replay, 1992. A last-minute of extra-time thunderbolt that won us the game. Only a few goals since then have ever come near to recapturing that feeling when the ball hit the top corner. BEST GROUND VISITED WATCHING SFC Saying Goodison Park for a couple of Liverpool Senior Cup finals isn't fair on a lot of clubs we've played at the same level as. Otherwise I'd have to go for Nene Park, Rusden & Diamonds ground as the best. ANY ANECDOTES : During the petrol crisis of 2000 I was talked into travelling away to Doncaster on a Tuesday night by train. Getting there wasn't a problem, and a few beers were drunk on the way too. I think Southport lost the game 1-0, then myself and 2 companions made our way back to the train station. Upon arriving at Doncaster station we realised that one of the lads had got the train times wrong, and that we could get back as far as Manchester Piccadilly that night. We did that, and had to spend 3 hours in the middle of the night wandering the streets of Manchester and getting a bit of kip on the station's lovely metal seats. I arrived back in Southport at around 7am and have never doen a midweek game by train since. Sometimes football can make you do stupid things. |
