FAN PROFILE JOHN HAMPSON

FAN PROFILE

NAME-            John Hampson

FIRST HOME GAME EVER SEEN-Doncaster Rovers 26/12/63, won 3-0 heard my first football chant” Digger Dagger Digger Dagger Oi Oi Oi”

FIRST AWAY GAME EVER SEEN-Rotherham Utd lost 3-1 Terry Harkin goal for the Port, over 10,000 at the match, they don’t get that for a Championship game there these days.

BEST GAME EVER SEEN Mansfield Town away in the FA Cup was a tremendous performance against a league team who were in the top 2 of their league at the time, nearly strangled my lad after Ross’s goal, I forgot to let go of him.

WORST GAME EVER SEEN-17/4/77 Cambridge Utd away, lost 5-1, even the own goal by their defender (Brenda Batson, later to become chairman of the PFA) was a joke, the keeper left it believing  a foul had been given.

BEST OCCASION-witnessing something I never thought I would see the Port walking out at Wembley and having my 2 children see it with me.

WORST OCCASION-Majorca ,June 1978, getting myself a Southport T shirt printed ( the days before replica kits) proudly putting it on and then going for a newspaper…….the rest is too painful to print.

FAVOURITE EVER PLAYER Numerous but if I’ve got to pick one, ERIC REDROBE even registered my last dog at the kennel club ERIC THE REDROBE.

FUNNIEST MOMENT WATCHING SFC-Dicko trying to dribble around the 2 best strikers in the conference, Darby and Jackson of Rushden, he beat one, but alas not the other……goal Rushden, not funny at the time but in hindsight, only England’s No1 would have the temerity.

BEST GOAL SEEN SCORED BY SOUTHPORT PLAYER- Again lots but Gary Coopers against Hull City in the league cup (our last to date) at Haig Ave.(Rob-It’s funny how many people recall this goal as the best, it is certainly mine and I know of others who have it top of their list as well)

 BEST GROUND VISITED WATCHING SFC-Wembley

ANY ANECDOTES-That goal of Coopers is memorable for another reason as I was a police officer on duty at the Blowick End in the days when we stood pitchside without thought I punched the air only to get a rollicking off the duty Inspector, it was worth it though for the unobstructed view of my favourite goal.

Thank you to John for this profile. I know he is with today’s match sponsors Dent, Raven & Marsden and specifically requested it be included in today’s programme.
