MARCH 2010 NEWS ARCHIVE

30 Mar Tonight's game between Ilkeston and Workington was postponed due to waterlogging. Workington are now the only team who could deny us a play off place after Stalybridge's defeat at Droylsden last night.

29 Mar I understand the third goal on Saturday has been officially accredited to Chris Simm in which case I go with that.

Some interesting looking weather heading our way in the next few days. Hopefully it will be better by Saturday in Harrogate.

27 Mar Home v Vauxhall Motors. SOUTHPORT 3 VAUXHALL MOTORS 0 A comfortable enough win. Debate over our goalscorers again. 100% certain own goal for the first, definite Daly for the second but was the third also an own goal? Claimed by Simmo and the Press Association have given it to him but it looked like the keeper punched it in to me. Awaiting official confirmation.

Looking back on last season and comparing. The corresponding Saturday last season saw us beat Stafford 3-2 in front of a gate of 873 with Stafford bringing far more than Vauxhall did. They were our 67th points and we were in third position. It was our 33rd game. Today we have 71 points from 34 games. Very similar in terms of gates and points per game. We did of course get a couple of decent gates to boost the average at the end of the season. Hopefully we can crack the 1000 mark on Easter Monday.

Ciaran Kilheeney was our leading scorer last season with 16. Dale's is now on 16 (plus 2 against Farsley.... possibly)

25 Mar Res Away at Formby win 6-1 with a Danny Lloyd first half hat-trick, Allan Collins with two and Conor Swale netting the other.

Fleetwood win 3-2 at Stalybridge.

24 Mar PLAYER LISTS updated at long last. I have added columns in to show the POB's and DOB's for those I know but there is a lot of work still to be done on completing this. It's a job for the close season.

23 Mar Away Gloucester City (at Cirencester) GLOUCESTER CITY 2 SOUTHPORT 2. A cold, wet night saw the points shared with us twice coming from behind. Goals scored by the impressive duo of Chris Simm and Steve Daly. I don't think anyone can argue that a draw was a fair result with both sides creating chances. Dodgy defending, probably down to the very wet surface, cost us the two goals. Very good midweek attendance of 301 included 73 travelling Sandgrounders.

My friend in Cirencester tells me it is damp and very cold. Bring an extra layer and a brolly is the advice.

Updates will be appearing in the banner on the front page from tonight's game as long as Julia remembers which buttons to press! (I did!)

22 Mar I have a feeling we could be heading for our lowest attendance of the season at Cirencester tomorrow. Gloucester's midweek crowds are very low and with not that many likely to be going from Southport, although I do know of a few, we are likely to hit the season's low.

I'd like to "thank" everyone who suggested I should wear a Liverpoo shirt in the Club Shop on Saturday for the Shirt Of Hurt campaign. I'm sorry, I just couldn't do it despite the pledge offers. I feel very guilty as it is such a worthy cause but some things in life are just too hard to bear and this was one pledge too far.

Looks like the Official Site has been hacked. I understand repairs are underway.

Finally, the music played at the ground is nothing to do with me!

21 Mar I've added columns to the table to show the impact of a successful Fleetwood appeal. Eastwood would be back in the play offs.

20 Mar Home v Droylsden. SOUTHPORT 3 DROYLSDEN 3. A very entertaining game. Very impressed with Droylsden's style of play which made for a good match. We appeared to be in command before Droylsden had a purple patch playing some superb football. It was great to see the way we battled back to get the point. I was telling people before the game that I'd had a little flutter on a 4-4 draw at 150/1, nearly! Two pens from Matty and a goal from Simmo. The score enters our record books as equalling the highest home scoring draw along with just four others.

The watching Stuart Bimson and Steve Farrelly sign the book.

19 Mar A combination of a very busy week at work, programmes to prepare and being out three nights this week have seen the website neglected a bit. Normal service will be resumed in the near future.

Just in case the Fleetwood appeal is successful, I have shown the top of the table positions with the points reinstated. The appeal is a nonsense as we all know but my worry is that "Money Talks" so who knows what may happen.

18 Mar Trust In Yellow meeting with Liam in attendance taking part in a Q&A session with supporters.

16 Mar Home v Workington SOUTHPORT 2 WORKINGTON 0. Two first half goals from Chris Simm and Steve Daly sealed the points. Good solid performance with the job done in the first half. Could ask no more. Joint top on goal difference with Fleetwood staying top on the strength of having scored more goals than us. We still have the game in hand.

15 Mar PREDICTION LEAGUE Updated with Farsley removed.

14 Mar Everton Ladies v Barnet Ladies FA Womens Cup Semi Final 2pm at Haig Ave. Everton win 2-0.

I've had a very busy weekend with two programmes to pull together as well as a match at Redditch so some parts of the site are not fully updated. It will be a few days before the updated Prediction League is published following Farsley's demise as it will take a bit of sorting out.

I have updated the league table, appearances and scorers and fixtures and results to take into account the loss of Farsley but some of the others remain in need of changing.

13 Mar Away Redditch United REDDITCH 2 SOUTHPORT 2. A horrible match which saw us go two down and down to ten men but then fight back to get an unlikely point. It's games like this at places like this that really make you realise how much we need to be promoted. Rumours that the ref kept asking for the ball to be changed so that they could be fitted with a red light as passing aircraft were getting concerned are way off the mark but you could understand it. The pitch was not conducive to good football but once Boothy came on and we at least played it to feet we made some headway. I think the first half will go down as the worst half of football I have seen for quite some time but thankfully the changes came and what was looking likely to be a disaster afternoon turned out well in the end.

12 Mar Farsley record expunged. It will take me some time to update everything on the site so bear with me.

11 Mar Res H v Barrow An excellent game sees us win 4-2.

9 Mar Away Stalybridge Celtic-Bring your torches, miners lamps, Glo-Sticks, floodlights etc!

STALYBRIDGE 0 SOUTHPORT 1-Full site update Wednesday evening but it was a very enjoyable evening!! A goal by Steve Daly (his 55th which could become his 53rd) in Liam's 252nd game (which could become his 250th) gave us a very very good victory in our 1339th league game (which could become 1337) Chris Lever's 92nd game, you guessed it... it could become his 90th. As you can see it is a nightmare scenario if the record is going to be wiped out. The lights stayed on and we had a great night.

The table below is without Farsley's record. Official confirmation that their record is to be expunged is still awaited.

6 Mar Home v Gainsborough Trinity. SOUTHPORT 0 GAINSBOROUGH 0. Not the best of games to say the least. The ball spent far too much time in the air. We were crying out for someone to run at the Gainsborough defence, as we were at Corby last week but sadly nobody was able to do it. Fleetwood have a good 2-0 win at Hinckley.

Reserves Results and Fixtures updated

Demand for coach places to The Reebok was high today and the signs are very promising for a very good following. Trust members need only pay £6 in advance for this game. Full details shortly.

4 Mar Somewhat belatedly I have updated the PREDICTION LEAGUE after Tuesday's games. Let's hope we get a game on on Saturday. There aren't that many free dates available now.

I have copies of the postponed match programme from Tuesday available for sale to anyone who wants one, although I say it myself, it is a pretty good read! Mail me and I can send one out for £2.50 plus 90pence First Class Postage or call in to the shop on Saturday.

2 Mar Home v Alfreton Town MATCH OFF due to a frozen pitch.

1 Mar Finally agreed date of 14 April for LJC Final at The Reebok.
