AWAY DAYS Which match to go to, Prescot or Congleton? This was the dilemma we faced pre-season. No doubt at all, Prescot, just down the road easy to get to? No, we (Julia, the wife) just had to be different and go to Congleton. It seemed like a good idea, it was a new ground for me, and Julia had suggested we make a day of it and go for lunch, as it had been my birthday the day before, at a pub on the way, taking the scenic route rather than the motorway. Unfortunately that scenic route involved the Runcorn
Bridge!!! We had set off from Ainsdale at 11.30, we had got to the
lead up to the bridge at 12.05, we were still on the Runcorn Bridge at 1.20!
It was hot and there was no turning back, we were trapped. Once off the bridge we decided that we would just have to
skip lunch and make our way straight to Congleton and arrived hot, bothered
and with very numb behinds at 2.25, nearly 3 hours door to door. My birthday
lunch therefore consisted of a packet of Cheese and Onion crisps, a finger of
fudge and a can of Coke. The game itself wasn’t bad with the lads creating a
bagful of chances but unable to convert any of them until spurred on by
Congleton scoring we went straight down the other end and equalised through
Lee Mulvaney I was very impressed by James Deane at right back, he
looked an exciting prospect. It was the first time I had seen him play and
will be one I will be looking out for in the future. Dan Thompson, son of
Dave, also made a late subs appearance. I am one of those people who isn’t
very good at likenesses but there was no mistaking Dan, he was certainly the
postman’s son! The away following of, as far as I could tell, two, were very disappointed that the players failed to acknowledge the magnificent support! If only they had known what we had been through to get there. So to the journey home, one hour 10 minutes door to door and straight to the Arion for a much needed meal. |
